Delray Beach CRA: Championing Urban Revitalization and Community Prosperity
Since its establishment in 1985, the Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) has played a pivotal role in revitalizing our city. As we enter 2025, we wanted to take the opportunity to reintroduce this initiative to those who are less familiar with the CRA.
With a mission to create a sustainable downtown, eliminate blight, and encourage economic growth, the CRA has been a critical partner in shaping Delray Beach into the vibrant, thriving community we know today.
Reflections on Delray Beach’s Evolution
“I grew up coming to Delray, so I remember what it was like in the ‘90s and 2000s, when the biggest destination—at least for me—was the beach,” said Christine Tibbs, CRA Assistant Director. “We didn’t stop too often before we got to the beach. That’s definitely not the case now. A lot has changed since 1985, and it continues to change.”
The story of the CRA is about the community and the people behind its mission who drive redevelopment efforts.
“When the Community Redevelopment Agency was established in 1985, the area of Palm Beach County was one of the fastest-growing in the nation,” said Renée Jadusingh, CRA Executive Director. “At that time, a large number of people were moving to the suburbs west of I-95. However, the CRA area includes the older portions of the city, including the historic downtown, that were in need of rehabilitation. Since then, there has been tremendous growth in the CRA (district) thanks to both private and public investment.”
The CRA’s Impact: Driving Growth and Community Development
The organization focuses on revitalizing neighborhoods by tackling blight and improving living conditions. Through redevelopment, historic preservation, and the creation of affordable housing, it helps build stronger, more vibrant communities where people can thrive and connect.
“The Delray Beach CRA has always been in tune with the redevelopment needs of each sub-area that we’re working with,” said Jadusingh. “We understand that one redevelopment strategy doesn’t fit every area, so it’s important to adapt and make changes to ensure that the needs of the community are being met.”
A Commitment to Delray Beach: The CRA’s Ongoing Role in the Community
At its core, the CRA is not just an organization—it’s a commitment to making Delray Beach a better place for everyone who lives, works, and visits here.
