SNAP and FAB
At your local Delray Beach GreenMarket, we are excited to have vendors that accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This program, in partnership with Fresh Access Bucks (FAB), encourages people to visit the market and purchase local produce with additional benefits.
The Origin of SNAP at GreenMarket
“The idea for the SNAP Program and GreenMarket junction came about after the CRA Assistant Director Christine Tibbs visited a green market in Northern Florida,” said Dominique Pelissier, Program assistant. “Because the area within our own CRA District is considered a food desert, the CRA team did not waste any time pursuing the opportunity to get the program at our local GreenMarket.”
What is SNAP?
Previously known as the Food Stamp Program, SNAP is one of the nation’s most vital anti-hunger initiatives. It provides nutritional support to:
- Low-wage working families
- Low-income seniors
- People with disabilities on fixed incomes
- Individuals and households in need
What is Fresh Access Bucks (FAB)?
The Fresh Access Bucks (FAB) program is part of the initiative, ensuring increased access to fresh, local produce for SNAP recipients. This partnership helps families stretch their food budgets while supporting local farmers.
“We’ve received so much positive feedback about the program,” Pelissier said. “Tourists even tell me that a similar program is available in their state, and they’re thrilled it’s now available here, too.”
How to Use SNAP and FAB at the Delray Beach GreenMarket
Using SNAP and FAB at the market is easy! Here’s how it works:
- Arrive at the Market: Head to the SNAP/EBT tent where a representative will assist you.
- Purchase Tokens: Use your SNAP/EBT card to buy $1 or $5 wooden tokens. These tokens work like cash and can be used at participating GreenMarket vendor stands that display the SNAP/EBT sign.
- Get Your Match: When you swipe your card at the SNAP tent, you’ll receive a match of up to $40 in FAB every Saturday. This helps make fresh, healthy foods more affordable.
The Community Impact
Pelissier notes that the Delray Beach GreenMarket is the only market in Palm Beach County that offers this program. Additionally, it is one of the few markets open during the summer, so residents and visitors can use these benefits nearly year-round.
“Families have shared with me what they’ve been cooking during the week with produce from the GreenMarket,” Pelissier said. “It’s wonderful to hear how they are making the most of the fresh produce they’ve bought.”
