Transforming Pompey Park: A New Vision for Delray’s Beloved Community Space
If you’ve ever been to Pompey Park for any annual event, or even just to play in the park, then you know how amazing it is. However, the neighborhood’s residents asked for an upgrade and we’re glad to say that they’re getting it! With the help of the CRA, Pompey Park will become one of the newest and most enjoyed parks that Delray has seen in many years.
The wheels began moving in November 2022 and since then we’ve put out an invitation to bid and are now in negotiations with the No. 1 ranked firm. From here, we will present an agreement to the City Commission in May/June 2024 for approval. After the approval, there will be a pre-construction meeting and kick-off meeting.
Renovations will include the addition of two new pools, a new baseball field, a playground, basketball courts, more restrooms, a park shelter, parking spaces, and the construction of a new recreational building. Enhancements will also be made to the existing pool and pool building, as well as the existing little league field. Actually, plans include 25 amenity enhancements or new facilities!
Project goals include:
- Neighborhood engagement throughout each phase of the project
- Meeting the needs of our city’s increasingly diverse patrons
- Reflecting a commitment to equality, growth and education
- Providing access to a best-in-class venue, resources, and park programming
The project is scheduled to be completed in three phases and will take a few years to accomplish. The preliminary project schedule will be developed with the approved development firm.
“The community has been involved in the project for a few years. The city has collected input at different meetings, workshops, etc., such as public meetings, comment cards and online tools,” said Ivan Cabrera, CRA redevelopment manager.
The estimated pre-construction total cost of the project is $40 million, which the CRA has allocated for this current 2023-2024 fiscal year.
We are excited to once again be a part of a project that helps to improve the quality of life of our residents, improve the experience for visitors, and preserves the history of the community and place.
Stay tuned for the ground breaking announcement!
