Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Pickled Peppers: Q&A with Jolene’s Jar

Meet Jolene Mirenna, head-pickler at Jolene’s Jar a small-batch pickling company. Having relocated to South Florida from Pennsylvania, Jolene and her family have made their home in “The Village by the Sea” and their debut at the Delray Beach GreenMarket this season. We took a few minutes to learn more about Jolene and her pickled goodness.

If you were trapped on a desert island what three items would you ideally have?IMG_4701

That’s an easy one – a cocktail of course! Vodka, JJ Bloody Mary Rim Mix & JJ Spicy Bloody Mary Garnish.

What are your favorite words to live by/ favorite quote?

Where was the best destination you traveled to?

Thailand! I’ve traveled the world extensively. I enjoy taking cooking classes in different countries I visit which have led to influence some of my recipes and product. My Pickled Ginger Carrots were created based on Thai flavors of ginger, garlic, chili flakes, coriander seeds, vinegar & carrots. Yum!

What is your favorite product that you sell?

My favorite jar (tough choice here) has to be the pickled Za’atar Cauliflower. It’s the best! Za’atar is a Mediterranean spice mix that I actually import from Northern Lebanon to sell at the market. It’s very difficult to find, especially this high quality. At home I add it to everything from breadcrumbs, to olive oil, eggs and Greek yogurt! But when used as a pickling spice with cauliflower it is uniquely addictive.

Share a fun fact that people may not know about you.

I’ve spent the last fifteen years in the restaurant business everything from managing, serving, bartending, hosting, and cooking; you name it. I grew up with Depression-era (immigrant) grandparents & a thrifty mother. They (we) all canned. This endeavor was a natural progression for me. You can taste the passion in my pickles.
