Project Description: The Downtown Plan identified the need to create additional parking in the downtown beach area. Noting the cost and scarcity of available land in this area, the plan suggests structured parking (garages) as opposed to surface parking lots, and recommends that the City partner with a private developer in creating new parking areas. Public/private partnerships can achieve efficiencies in the use of land and in the costs of construction. The plan suggested a shared garage along Gleason Street, but a recently approved development plan for that site did not provide sufficient space to accommodate public parking. The Plan also noted that the City has been in discussions with the owners of the Marriott Courtyard hotel regarding a potential shared garage that would accommodate a proposed hotel expansion as well as some public spaces. The possibilities for implementing this project will require further analysis and continued discussions with the property owners.
