With Zika virus in the news and rainy season among us, it’s no wonder that everyone wants to avoid mosquitoes. But did you know that planting some fresh herbs that you can use every day can help repel mosquitoes and other bugs? The scents of these herbs repel mosquitoes and other pests through their aromatic oils. Some of the best herbs for repelling pests are:

Basil. Basil repels house flies and mosquitoes, and tastes great in almost any dish!  You can even make an all-natural insect repellent using basil by steeping fresh basil leaves in hot water.

Lavender repels moths, fleas, flies, and mosquitoes. Lavender looks beautiful, smells great, and can be used in teas and other dishes. A lavender bouquet can help repel pests!

Lemongrass repels mosquitoes. Citronella is a natural oil found in lemongrass. Lemongrass has many health benefits and is delicious! Many Asian recipes call for lemongrass. This grass grows prolifically here in South Florida!

Mint also repels mosquitoes. Mint spreads aggressively so it is best grown in a pot. This herb is great for flavoring tea, ice cream, and mojitos!

Rosemary repels a variety of insects harmful to vegetable plants, along with mosquitoes. Rosemary can be used to flavor a variety of dishes, or can be used as an ornamental plant.

Put on your gardening gloves and grow something today to defend your family against summer pests!
