A Good Homemade Scrub for the Holidays
By Paula Detwiller
Here’s an easy, make-it-yourself gift idea for the holidays: a fragrant body scrub. After all, winter is upon us—and women from Florida to Alaska are longing to exfoliate that dry, rough skin on their heels and elbows!
Homemade body scrubs only require a few inexpensive ingredients. It’s a fun project for the kids, too, and who knows? You might even start a family tradition of making homemade gifts together.
Here’s What You’ll Need
- 2 cups Epsom salts or coarse-ground Sea Salt (available at the GreenMarket)—or granulated cane sugar (which is gentler on sensitive skin)
- 1 cup cold-pressed olive oil, or grape seed, almond, or jojoba oil
- 8 drops essential oil(s)
- 1 drop food coloring
- Small canning jars or other airtight containers
Mix all ingredients and stir until color is even throughout. Spoon into airtight containers. Makes about 2 1/3 cups.
Experiment with different fragrance and color combinations—for example, green with eucalyptus, yellow with lemon, blue/purple with lavender. Make your own tags or labels, and tie a small disposable spoon to the container with ribbon or raffia. Voila!
Say Hello to Santa
If you miss out on Breakfast with Santa this Saturday morning at the Delray Beach Marriott, you can catch him in the afternoon at the Delray GreenMarket!. Bring the whole family to pose for photos with Santa at the Lay’ed in Delray booth, starting at noon.
And, in case you didn’t know, the GreenMarket is just three blocks from Old School Square, home of the World Famous 100-Foot Christmas Tree. There are other fun activities for kids, including a warm-weather-friendly ice-skating rink!
